“Blast off” Workshop at St. Petersburg Clay Co.

April 14th, 2011 by kellyscurtis

This past March I participated in the “Blast off” workshop at St. Petersburg Clay Co. Having recently moved to the West coast of Florida I was lucky to be involved in a pyromaniac’s dream workshop. The anagama kiln was fired for 7 days starting March 12, 2011. The loading took 2 days. While firing this huge kiln with 30 others including, Don Reitz, Chris Gustin, John Balasteri, Matt Long, Tara Wilson, Mackensie Smith and their students, we also fired the wood train kiln 2 times, the soda kiln 3 times and the salt kiln 3 times. At the same time, Don Reitz and John Balasteri installed some major pieces for the NCECA show and there were demonstrations and slide presentations by all. What a Blast! While the anagama cooled for 7 days, NCECA happened. We unloaded the anagama on March 30th and the results were jaw dropping….

Sensory overload! I can’t wait to get back to work.
